A guide to creating warm, layered spaces that feel collected and not simply decorated.
There is something about a beautifully styled coffee table that makes a room feel finished.
Not perfect. Not untouchable. Finished.
It’s the stack of books you’ve actually opened. The candle you light at the end of a long day. The little bowl you found while traveling—or perhaps the one you spotted at an antique shop and couldn’t leave behind. It’s fresh flowers clipped from the garden, a framed photograph tucked onto a console, or an object that means absolutely nothing to anyone else but something to you.

And sometimes, those stories are told in the smallest places.
Your coffee table and console may seem like supporting characters in a room, but they’re actually some of our favorite places to bring personality into a home. These are the surfaces where beautiful things and everyday life meet—and when they’re styled thoughtfully, they can make an entire room feel warmer, more intentional, and unmistakably yours.
So, for our very first journal entry, we’re starting right there.
Here’s how to create a surface that feels beautifully collected. Gone are the days where you simply decorate with a candle, a book, and a picture frame.
START WITH SOMETHING THAT GROUNDS THE SPACE
Before adding all of the pretty things, begin with an anchor.
On a coffee table, this might be a beautiful tray or a stack of oversized books. On a console, it could be a large piece of art, a vintage-inspired mirror, or a sculptural lamp.
Your anchor gives everything else somewhere to belong.
For coffee tables, we love starting with two or three beautiful books stacked together. Choose books that reflect something about you—interiors, fashion, travel, art, architecture, or photography. They add height and visual interest, but they also give your guests a tiny glimpse into what inspires you.
And yes, sometimes we absolutely buy the book because the cover is beautiful.
Both things can be true.
Try styling with: coffee-table books, decorative trays, oversized bowls, framed artwork, mirrors, or sculptural lamps.
MIX THINGS THAT FEEL NEW WITH THINGS THAT HAVE A STORY
One of the easiest ways to make a home feel warmer is to resist the urge to buy every accessory from the same place at the same time.
The rooms we love most often look as though they’ve come together slowly.
Pair the beautiful new vase you couldn’t stop thinking about with an old brass candlestick. Place a modern sculptural object beside a vintage book. Add something passed down from your grandmother next to something you picked up last Saturday.
When everything is brand new, a space can sometimes feel like a showroom.
When everything has a story, it starts to feel like home.
This is where your personality comes in. Your accessories don’t have to match perfectly. They simply need to feel as though they belong to the same story.
PLAY WITH HEIGHT, SHAPE, AND TEXTURE
If your coffee table feels a little off but you can’t figure out why, take a look at the height of everything you’ve placed on it.
If every object sits at the same level, the eye has nowhere to travel.
Instead, create a little movement.
Stack books and place a small decorative object on top. Add a taller vase with branches or flowers. Balance that height with a lower bowl or tray.
Then mix your materials.
Think polished brass next to worn wood. Smooth marble beside linen. Clear glass paired with something aged and imperfect.
Those contrasts are often what make a beautifully designed room feel rich without feeling overly decorated.
A simple formula to remember:
Something tall + something stacked + something sculptural + something natural.
You don’t have to use all four every time, but it’s a wonderful place to start.
ALWAYS ADD SOMETHING LIVING
There are few things that breathe life into a room quite like something from nature.
A vase overflowing with hydrangeas can make a formal room feel inviting. A few imperfect branches can make a modern space feel softer. Even a small bowl filled with seasonal fruit can add warmth and color.
And it doesn’t have to be elaborate.
Sometimes the most beautiful arrangement is simply a few branches clipped from outside and placed in a vessel you love.
We especially love magnolia branches, hydrangeas, tulips, olive branches, cherry blossoms, and seasonal greenery for adding height and softness.
The goal isn’t perfection. A little movement and imperfection often makes the arrangement even more beautiful.
GIVE THE EYE SOMEWHERE TO REST
One of the hardest parts of decorating is knowing when to stop.
Every inch of your coffee table does not need something on it.
In fact, please leave somewhere to put the coffee.
Negative space is part of the design.
If your surface begins to feel cluttered, remove one or two things and see how the remaining pieces feel. Often, the objects you love become more noticeable when they’re given a little breathing room.
A beautifully collected home should still be a home you can live in.
DON’T FORGET THE LITTLE THINGS
Sometimes the smallest objects make a surface memorable.
A beautiful matchbox beside your favorite candle.
A tiny dish for keys.
A magnifying glass resting on a stack of books.
A vintage box.
A small framed photograph.
A brass bell.
These aren’t necessarily things you need. They’re the details that make someone stop and look a little closer.
And that’s often where the story is.
OUR GO-TO STYLING PIECES
If you’re standing in front of an empty coffee table or console wondering where to begin, start your collection with:
• Two or three beautiful coffee-table books
• A decorative tray or bowl
• A candle you genuinely love to burn
• A vase or vessel with flowers, branches, or greenery
• One sculptural or unexpected object
• Something vintage, inherited, or collected
• A small decorative box or dish
• A framed photograph or piece of art
• A lamp for consoles that need warmth
• One object that simply makes you happy
You don’t need every item on this list. Choose a few, play with the arrangement, and allow your collection to grow over time.
Because the goal isn’t to create a coffee table that looks exactly like someone else’s.
It’s to create one that looks like it could only belong in your home.

Pull out the things you’ve tucked away.
Stack the books.
Light the candle.
Clip the branches.
Display the piece with the story behind it.
And don’t worry too much about getting it perfect.
